Cherries have anti-inflammatory benefits

Cherries have many health benefits according to Russel J. Reiter, Ph. D. and prominent nutrition researcher at the university of Texas Health Science Center in San Antonio. “There’s a significant body of evidence suggesting that cherries are one of the most nutritious fruits you can eat.” Cherries rank with blueberries as a disease fighting, antioxidant loaded super fruit.

Antioxidant Rich Cherries Help Aging Baby Boomers Feel Better

“Cherries not only contain significant levels of antioxidants, but they provide a unique combination of antioxidants that are not found in other fruits,” Reiter said. “The compounds in cherries . . . appear to have anti-inflammatory benefits, which may be particularly valuable for aging baby boomers suffering from joint pain.”

Cherry Super Fruit Folklore Upheld by Science

Some arthritis sufferers incorporate cherries or cherry juice in their diet to ease pain and inflammation. In the last few years, research seems to support the folklore surrounding cherries and this health benefit. A Michigan State University research study found that cherries are a rich source of an antioxidant that works in the same way as some pain medications work. Blackberries and strawberries also contain this antioxidant, but not blueberries or cranberries.

Antioxidants in Cherries may Promote Restful Sleep

Eating a handful of tart cherries may result in a better night’s sleep. Cherries are a source of melatonin, an antioxidant that helps the body’s natural sleep patterns, according Reiter, who is one of the world’s leading authorities on melatonin. Melatonin is rarely found in foods.

As if I didn’t love cherries enough, now I’ve got even more reason to pick out some bags of cherries from the local market or even go cherry picking myself! Totally didn’t know cherries could fight inflammation in addition to aging. Thanks for this insight!
